Reading across the Atlantic
On a regular basis the children in Y4 have begun to have a 'conference call' with a school in the USA.
It is held (not every) on a Friday afternoon at 2.30pm our time.
The children sit in the ICT suite and through the power of media they connect with 'Petway Elementry School' in New Jersey, USA
The children from our school can see the children from their school and visa versa.
It is a wonderful opportunity for the children at school to learn from other children about a whole different culture, about their school, their community and their education. We also get to share with them how and what it is like to live in Manchester and go to St. Johns School in Mosley Common.
Last week (29th Jan 2010) we gave a presentation to the American school to let them know about our school and community and today (5th February) it was their opportunity to give us a power point presentation explaining their school and community.
Here is a brief summary of what the children learnt in the half hour session from the children in New Jersey.
They learnt...
* There are 52 states in the USA and New Jersey is the 3rd smallest
* The north of New Jersey is industrial and the south is farmland.
* School starts at 9.30am which is 3.30pm our time (this means that the chilren in the USA came to school an hour early to partake in the conference call)
* The 4 most popular sports in the USA are soccer, football, basketball and baseball
* They are expecting a blizzard with an estimated forcast of 10 inches of snow on its way!
The children between the two schools also had a discussion about fast food restaurants, comparing what we have and which is the best and school uniforms were also a point of conversation!
More sessions are planned with the next set for the first Friday in March. In the meantime both schools will be reading and discussing the book 'James and the Giant Peach' and will discuss it together at this next meeting.
