Hello and welcome to Year 1 at St. John’s Mosley Common.
A typical day in Year 1 begins with our morning activities which may be handwriting, reading or table top activities. We then begin our morning with Collective Worship, Picture News or our Celebration Assembly where we learn all about the teachings of God and Jesus Christ.
Following this we learn Phonics following the RWI programme, all children are in groups based on assessment. Children will learn to decode words and learn new sounds during each lesson which helps the children progress with reading, spelling and writing. During the Phonics lesson children will read a coloured banded book linked to the RWI Phonics programme.
After Phonics, we have playtime where the children have time to talk and play with their friends with a healthy snack or toast.
After playtime the children will learn English and Maths. English is based on Oracy, poetry, non – fiction and fiction. Every aspect of the children’s learning in English links to a book. In Maths the children learn lots of new concepts related to Number, Calculations, Shape, Space and Measure. We use our mathematical skills to answer fluency, reasoning and problem solving activities on a daily basis.
In the afternoons, depending on the day of the week and the topic we are covering, we learn how to do investigations in Science and we learn about significant people and events, like Florence Nightingale, in History. We also learn about the world and local areas in Geography and we cover lots of themes in Religious Education. We also design and make things in Design and Technology and learn about artists and experiment with different techniques in Art. Our P.E. lessons take place twice a week and this teaches the children various skills linked to the REAL PE outcomes.
At each half - term we will send out a letter to explain each new topic and how you can help your child at home. This will be sent out via seesaw, our parent / school communication tool.
St. John’s holds an open door policy. If you would like to visit our Year 1 class, please contact the school office on 0161 790 2195 and we will be happy to arrange a visit for you.
